A close, softly lit black-and-white portrait of Divine smiling, her chin resting on her hand, long twists falling past her shoulder.

A note, written properly for once

The Letter

I.

The word that’s too small

I have tried, more than once, to find a bigger word than love. Something with more room in it. Everything I reach for comes back too small, so I keep using the one everybody uses — and I mean it in a way I don’t think the word was built to hold.

II.

The shape I’m already in

You are not the best part of my day. That’s still too small. You are the reason the day has parts — the thing I arrange the hours around, the first thought that shows up before I’ve decided to think anything at all. Loving you isn’t something I do, Mama. It’s the shape I’m already in.

III.

The quiet part

People talk about love like it is loud. Ours isn’t, most of the time. It’s that when something happens — good, bad, or completely stupid — you are the first person I want to tell, before I’ve even worked out how I feel about it. That’s the part nobody warns you about. Not the noise. The wanting to tell you.

IV.

A receipt, not a gesture

So this isn’t a grand gesture. It’s a receipt. Proof that on an ordinary Saturday somebody sat down and built a whole quiet place on the internet for no reason except that you exist and I still haven’t got over it. Stay. That’s the only thing I’m asking. Stay, and let me keep looking at you like this.

Four of them, and they all mean the same thing

The names I call you

  1. saved in my phone as My Other Half Not a nickname. A description.
  2. Mama Involuntary. It arrives before I’ve chosen to say anything.
  3. Babe The everyday one. The one that has done the most work.
  4. EkaIbibio — mother For when I’m playing. And for when I’m not.
vi Your eyes closed.
Your head down on me.

the one I kept for last

This is the only picture in the world with the two of us in it. You are not posing. You are not checking the camera. Your eyes are closed and your head is down on me, and you look like someone who has finally stopped bracing for something.

That is the part that undoes me. Not that you are beautiful — you already know that. That you get to be soft around me. That you can put your whole weight down and nothing bad happens. If I never got another photograph of us for the rest of my life, I would keep this one, and it would be enough.

Happy Girlfriend’s Day, My Other Half.
